From AI Assistant to Engineering Infrastructure
The most valuable AI review may happen before a pull request exists.
AI is moving beyond autocomplete and into the systems that shape architecture, performance, testing, and engineering standards. The goal is not simply to produce more code. It is to reduce the back-and-forth required to produce code that fits a large, complex organization.
The MongoDB Atlas API Platform case study illustrates this progression. I have been working with a community of practitioners and the wider industry on evaluating AI tools not only by how well they generated code, but by whether they could reason across large codebases, connect to existing workflows, and help evaluate technical decisions.
That distinction matters. Code generation is visible and easy to demo. Engineering judgment is slower, contextual, and usually where the expensive mistakes hide.
During those sessions I proposed an AI maturity model in four stages:
- Structured prompting
- Connecting agents to richer context through MCPs and internal systems
- Encoding guidelines and guardrails via frameworks and tools
- Building specialized agents for recurring engineering problems with curated skills
At the final stage, an agent is no longer a clever chatbot sitting beside the workflow. It becomes part of the workflow. My own examples include agents for architecture validation, performance analysis, and dynamically querying API standards.
This is also the focus of my LeadDev session on building persona-based agents at MongoDB: building systems that can analyze large codebases, compare architectural alternatives, and support engineers with context rather than producing generic output.
In that interview I emphasized the scale of engineering maturity and excellence:
AI adoption scales when engineering excellence scales with it.
That means starting with a few high-value use cases, making organizational knowledge accessible to agents, and giving engineers structured ways to evaluate the results. The biggest gains come less from writing code and more from shortening the feedback loop around design, review, and debugging — a topic I explored through scaffolding and automated generation.
The durable mental model is not “AI replaces the engineer.” It is “engineering judgment becomes executable” — with the same constraints, standards, and failure modes that apply to every other production system. This aligns with the platform engineering foundation I’ve written about — shared infrastructure requires dedicated ownership, and AI agents are no exception.
